Education can make a measurable difference.
In a randomized controlled trial with Seattle Police Department employees, an eight-week fatigue-management training program significantly increased sleep by approximately 18 minutes per 24-hour period.
The training addressed sleep hygiene, shift work and circadian rhythms, nutrition and exercise, stress management, and practical fatigue countermeasures. Researchers also reported reductions in depression, anxiety, PTSD symptoms, and likelihood of falling asleep at the wheel.
The takeaway: Helping officers understand and respond to the biology behind fatigue can matter.
